ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team will head to the state of Florida for the second time in two weeks as the Blue Hens will play five games at the Orange Blossom Invitational this weekend.
Delaware (0-5), which opened its season against stiff competition including three ranked foes last weekend at the USF Tournament, will open play this weekend by taking on Marshall at 1 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Blue Hens then face Stetson at 3:15 p.m. and George Washington at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, before taking on LIU-Brooklyn at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
UD junior first baseman Mariah Kondravy batted .467 (7 for 15) last weekend with three RBI and three runs scored, and needs just four more RBI to become the Blue Hens' all-time leader in that category. Junior centerfielder Devon Steiner opened her UD career by going 7 for 16 at the plate for a .438 average, while Emily Neal, Alyshia Dellatore and Anna Steinmetz added four hits apiece.
Marshall opened its season last weekend by winning three of five games at the Florida State Invitational, with both of its losses coming to the third-ranked Seminoles. Elicia D'Orazio batted .368 with a team-leading seven hits for the Thundering Herd, while Jordan Dixon posted a 1.95 ERA while earning all five decisions in the circle.
Bethune-Cookman won one of its first five games at the Florida Atlantic Classic last weekend, with the Wildcats' lone win coming over Boston University. Mariah Davis posted a .533 batting average at the tournament, while Ryan Jackson drove home a team-leading five runs at the plate.
Stetson opened its campaign by winning four of five games at its home tournament, posting a pair of wins over Akron and Savannah State. Linda Ross is hitting .455 for Stetson, while Maggie Fritts has added two home runs and Jessie TenBroeck leads the nation with nine steals.
George Washington will be opening its season this weekend, while LIU-Brooklyn is looking for its first win after dropping a pair of doubleheaders at Florida Gulf Coast last weekend.
Marshall has won five of the six all-time meetings with Delaware, including an 8-3 victory at the Citrus Classic in Orlando in 2014. The Blue Hens are 2-3 against LIU-Brooklyn, although the teams have not met since 1994, while Delaware will be playing Bethune-Cookman, Stetson and George Washington for the first time in school history.
