GAME PREVIEW
The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team will be looking to make it two straight victories Tuesday as the Blue Hens travel south to Virginia to take on VMI in the first mid-week game of the season.
Delaware (2-2) evened its record Saturday with a thrilling 11-10 win over Monmouth at Delaware Stadium.
A furious comeback from a first half deficit, a brilliant performance by a freshman goalkeeper in his first career start, and a goal with 1:04 left in the first overtime period all resulted in the victory.
Delaware sophomore Andrew Romagnoli scored his third goal of the game with 1:04 left in the first overtime to lift the Blue Hens to the comeback victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Blue Hens scored six goals in the third quarter to overcome an early 5-2 deficit in a game that eventually saw the score tied six times in the second half. Delaware appeared to have the game won when Joe Eisele tallied his fourth goal of the game with 3:26 left but Monmouth (2-2) sent the game into overtime when Tyler Keen scored with 17 seconds left in regulation.
Monmouth won the opening faceoff in overtime and got two shots off but Delaware freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca saved both and the Hens regained possession. After a timeout with 1:21 left, the Hens worked the ball around until Romagnoli slipped a shot from the left side from 15 yards out for the game winner, setting off a wild celebration on the field.
VMI (1-1) is coming off its first win of the season Saturday. Trailing for most of the game, VMI used a fourth-quarter rally to earn a 9-8 come-from-behind win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in its home opener at Drill Field.
The Keydets trailed by a 6-5 tally after three quarters after getting behind by a 6-3 margin midway through the second quarter. VMI gradually kept pace and tied the score at 6-6 early in the fourth quarter when senior Nick Dodd attacked the net unassisted and knotted the game. John Daniel then scored the goal that put VMI ahead for good just 1:03 into the final quarter.
SERIES INFORMATION
» Delaware and VMI meet for just the fourth time and for the first time in 65 years.
» The Blue Hens lead the series by a 3-0 margin as Delaware posted identical wins of 11-6 in both 1949 (at Newark, Del.) and 1950 (at Lexington, Va.) and followed with a 14-6 victory last season at Delaware Stadium
» In last year's game, Delaware redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli exploded for six goals, including four in a seven-goal first quarter, to lead Delaware to its first victory of the season, a 14-6 triumph. Campbell Parker added two goals and an assist and Delaware won 15 of 24 faceoffs in the victory.
» Delaware needs just two victories to reach 500 wins in school history (now 498-449-3 since 1948).
