NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team will open its Colonial Athletic Association schedule this weekend when the Blue Hens welcome local rival Towson to the UD Softball Stadium for a three-game series.
The Blue Hens and Tigers will play a single game on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 noon. Live stats for all three games will be available at BlueHenStats.com.
Delaware has won six consecutive games to improve its record to 8-12 on the year, and is coming off a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Villanova on Tuesday that featured a pair of walkoff victories. Giovanna Kolofer went 5 for 8 with four RBI during the sweep, and lined a game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh during the opener. Mattie Nuccio added four hits on the day, while Mariah Kondravy belted a two-run walkoff homer during the nightcap.
The Blue Hens are led offensively by Anna Steinmetz, who is hitting .371 with a team-high 15 RBI and a CAA-leading five home runs on the year. Kolofer has increased her batting average to .333 this season, while Emily Neal is batting .327 and Leanna Gearhart carries a .313 average into the series. Jordan Cargile, who picked up both wins in the circle against Villanova and now has six victories on the season, paces the UD pitching staff while Taylor Curran leads the squad with a 3.59 earned run average.
Towson, which was picked second in the CAA Preseason Poll, is 9-13 on the year after splitting a twinbill at Virginia on Tuesday and dropping a doubleheader at Longwood on Wednesday. Shelby Stracher leads the Tigers with a .358 batting average, while Daria Edwards is hitting .352 with team-highs of 25 hits and six doubles. Holiday Cahill has posted a .323 average this year, while Kendyl Scott is hitting .320 and leads the squad with 16 runs and seven steals.
Julia Smith-Harrington is 6-6 with a 4.15 earned run average in the circle for Towson, while Megan Mejter is 3-7 with a 4.45 ERA.
Delaware holds a slim 58-56 all-time series advantage over Towson, although the Tigers have taken two of three meetings in each of the last three years.
