PHILADELPHIA -- Dragons pinch hitter Jourdan Skirha hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Drexel softball team a dramatic 9-7 victory over the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at the DU Softball Field.
The Dragons (9-10, 1-3 CAA) trailed by three runs heading to the bottom of the seventh before scoring five times to claim the victory. The first two Drexel batters reached on Delaware errors, before Linda Rush delivered an RBI double to rightfield. Blue Hen pitcher Jordan Cargile then retired Taylor Lee on a groundout, but after Kai Uyesaka walked, Skirha belted a pitch over the fence in leftcenter for her first career home run.
The Blue Hens (12-14, 2-2 CAA) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Giovanna Kolofer tripled to rightcenter and Mariah Kondravy followed with an RBI single up the middle.
Emily Neal then led off the top of the second with a single, and after moving to third on a bunt single by Jess Bishop, she scored when Mattie Nuccio bounced into a fielder's choice. One out later Kolofer singled home Leanna Gearhart, increasing the Delaware lead to 3-0.
The Dragons pulled even in the bottom of the third, as Mari Gardner drilled a solo home run to centerfield before Lee delivered a two-run double to right.
Delaware went back in front in the top of the fifth when Kondravy blasted a solo homer to rightcenter, while Cargile worked out of trouble in the bottom half to keep the Blue Hens in front.
UD then tacked on three two-out runs in the top of the sixth, as Kolofer worked a bases loaded walk while Kondravy followed by lacing a two-run single to left to make it a 7-3 game. However Drexel got a run back in the bottom of the frame, before scoring five times in the seventh.
Drexel relief pitcher Tara Konopka picked up the win after allowing four runs (one earned), on six hits in five innings, while Cargile dropped to 9-8 as she gave up nine runs (four earned) on nine hits.
Kondravy finished 4 for 4 with four RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Kolofer and Neal added two hits apiece.
Game Notes:
• Kondravy's homer was the 22nd of her career, tying her with Steinmetz as both players are just one shy of the UD career mark
• Kolofer tripled and singled during her first two at bats, and had posted a hit in nine straight at bats prior to grounding out in the fifth
• Kondravy extended her hitting streak to seven games
• Drexel snapped a 25-game CAA losing skid
• Delaware had its four-game winning streak halted
• The Blue Hens and Dragons will wrap up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday
