PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware softball team exploded for 19 runs on 26 hits as the Blue Hens swept a doubleheader from Drexel, 11-3 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field.
The Blue Hens fell behind 3-1 in the opener but responded to score the final 18 runs of the day, as Delaware evened its overall record at 14-14 and moved to 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
UD, which won its second straight league series, is tied for second place in the CAA standings along with James Madison, just one game behind conference leader UNCW. Drexel, which posted a 9-7 victory over the Blue Hens on Saturday, dropped to 9-12 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Devon Steiner led Delaware's offensive onslaught by finishing 5 for 7 at the plate with six RBI, while Giovanna Kolofer added four hits and drove home five. Emily Neal and Anna Steinmetz also had four hits on the day, while Mariah Kondravy added three and Leanna Gearhart scored four times.
Junior righthander Jordan Cargile enjoyed a tremendous afternoon in the circle, scattering seven hits
in 10 scoreless innings while picking up a pair of wins.
Drexel scored twice during the opening inning of the first game, and after an RBI single by Steiner in the second put Delaware on the board, the Dragons added a run in the bottom half on a run-scoring single by Jenelle Ladrido to take a 3-1 advantage.
But the Blue Hens would dominate from there, scoring four times in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Neal singled home Miranda O'Donald with the first run of the frame, while Steiner followed with a three-run homer to rightcenter as Delaware went in front 5-3.
After Neal drove home another run with a single in the fifth, Kondravy blasted a two-run shot to leftcenter in the sixth as the Blue Hens increased the lead to five.
Delaware tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh as Steiner and Mattie Nuccio delivered RBI singles before Kolofer drove home the final run by bouncing into a fielder's choice.
Meanwhile Cargile allowed just one hit and struck out four in five innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory in the circle. Neal and Steiner each finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored at the plate, with Steiner driving home five and Neal two.
Delaware, which scored during its final four innings of the opener, then scored during all five frames of the nightcap. Kolofer singled home Gearhart in the top of the first, and then added a two-run single in the second to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 advantage.
Steinmetz led off the top of the third with a home run to rightcenter, while RBI singles by Kolofer, Steinmetz and Alyshia Dellatore increased the margin to seven in the fourth inning.
Steiner then singled home Kolofer in the fifth, and after Cargile set down the Dragons in the bottom half, the game ended due to the mercy rule. Kolofer finished 4 for 4 with four RBI during the second victory, while Cargile notched her second shutout of the season and earned her 11th win of the campaign.
