NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen pitchers Taylor Curran and Jordan Cargile each produced solid outings in the circle as the University of Delaware softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Rider, 8-1 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
Delaware, which is now 16-14 and has moved over the .500 mark for the first time this year, has now won 14 of its last 16 games including four in a row. Rider has dropped 11 straight while falling to 3-24 on the year.
The Broncs scored a run during the top of the first inning of the opener on a pair of Blue Hen errors, but Alyshia Dellatore doubled home Emily Neal in the bottom of the second to pull Delaware even. The Blue Hens then put the game away in the third by scoring six times, the first two on a two-run single by Mariah Kondravy. Anna Steinmetz followed with an RBI double, and after a run scored on a Rider error, Mattie Nuccio capped the rally with a two-run single to rightfield.
Delaware then added the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Kondravy lined a single up the middle to chase home Nuccio. Meanwhile Curran allowed just the one unearned run on five hits in a complete game effort, improving to 3-1 on the year.
Rider again struck first in the nightcap by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second off UD starter Kat Morris, before Giovanna Kolofer put Delaware on the board in the bottom of the fourth when she scored on an inside the park homer to rightfield.
Dellatore then doubled in the fifth and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Dana Varriello, while Nuccio followd with a triple and scored on a throwing error by Rider catcher Alexa Feliciano for the winning run.
Cargile would do the rest as she fired 4.2 hitless innings of relief, striking out three and walking just one to improve to 12-8 on the season.
Nuccio, Steinmetz and Dellatore led the Blue Hen attack with three hits apiece during the twinbill, while Neal and Kolofer each added two hits.
Game Notes:
• Curran's complete game was her first of the season and the fourth of her career
• Cargile has now tossed 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings
• Kolofer hit her second home run of the year and the fourth of her career
• Delaware defeated Rider for the ninth and 10th consecutive meetings
• The Blue Hens improved to 8-1 at home this year
• UD's 14-2 run is the program's best since the Hens went 16-2 from Mar. 1-24, 2013
• Delaware returns to CAA action this weekend with a three-game series at Hofstra
