ELON, N.C. -- Elon leftfielder Alaina Hall delivered a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Phoenix softball team a dramatic 1-0 victory over the University of Delaware Sunday afternoon at the Hunt Softball Park.
Elon, which improved to 32-18 overall and 9-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association, took the weekend series after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Blue Hens dropped to 20-26 overall and 7-11 in league play, and are now two and a half games behind the Phoenix in the race for the final CAA Tournament berth.
Delaware will need to sweep UNCW next weekend, and have either Hofstra get swept by Drexel or Elon get swept by 14th-ranked James Madison, to qualify for the league tournament on May 10-12.
Blue Hen righthander Jordan Cargile and Elon lefty Kiandra Mitchum battled in a pitchers' duel for the second consecutive afternoon, producing the teams' second straight 1-0 decision. Mitchum allowed just three singles and no walks while striking out three, as she improved to 18-11 on the year. Cargile dropped to 15-13 despite giving up just one unearned run on seven hits in a complete game effort.
Delaware mustered only bunt singles by Leanna Gearhart in the first inning and Morgan Schroll in the third, before coming up with its best chance to score in the top of the seventh. With one out Mariah Kondravy legged out an infield single, but Devon Steiner's deep flyball to centerfield was caught at the fence by Elon's Kara Shutt, before pinch runner Jess Bishop was thrown out attempting to steal second base.
Emily Roper then led off the bottom of the seventh by reaching on an infield single, while a throwing error by Blue Hen catcher Anna Steinmetz on a Callie Horn bunt put runners on second and third with nobody out.
Jenna Reilly then laid down a bunt, but UD third baseman Alyshia Dellatore made a diving stop and threw out pinch runner Morgan Reich at the plate to keep the game scoreless. However following an intentional walk to Hannah Olson, Hall laced the first pitch she saw into centerfield to give the Phoenix the win.
Delaware plays its final road games of the season on Wednesday when the Blue Hens head to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with the Hawks.
