HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware softball team posted a 6-4 comeback victory over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium to salvage the final game of the teams' Colonial Athletic Association weekend series.
Delaware improved to 17-16 overall and 5-4 in the conference following the victory, while the Pride dropped to 14-16 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Leanna Gearhart led off the game with a bunt single, and after moving to third on a steal and a Hofstra error, she scored on a wild pitch to give the Blue Hens the early lead. Anna Steinmetz then drilled a solo homer to leftfield as Delaware increased the margin to a pair through a half inning.
Brittany Allocca led off the bottom of the second with a home run to put Hofstra on the board, while an RBI single by Kristin Hallam later in the frame knotted the game at 2-2. Megan Patierno then smacked a solo home run in the third inning, her third longball of the weekend, to give Hofstra the lead for the first time on the day.
Delaware quickly tied the game back up in the top of the fourth when Giovanna Kolofer grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to drive home Mattie Nuccio. Jess Bishop then scored when Mariah Kondravy reached on an error, while Steinmetz followed with an RBI single to put the Blue Hens back on top 5-3.
Hofstra got a run back in the bottom half when Brielle Pietrafesa delivered an RBI single, but Delaware tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Alyshia Dellatore stole home. Blue Hen pitcher Jordan Cargile then retired the Pride in order during the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory.
Cargile improved to 13-9 on the season after allowing four runs on nine hits in a complete game effort, while Hofstra reliever Alyssa Irons fell to 2-7 as she gave up three runs on three hits during 3.2 innings of work. Steinmetz led the nine-hit Blue Hen attack by finishing 3 for 4 with two RBI, while Emily Neal added two hits on the afternoon.
