Welcome to the eighth installment of This is How I Train.
Every Tuesday and Thursday during the preseason, we will feature a member of the Blue Hen football team and learn a little more about what motivates them to excel.
Today we meet Kyle Yocum, a versatile senior fullback/tight end and one of the team's top leaders.
KYLE YOCUM
Senior • Fullback / Tight End • Reading, Pa. • Exeter Township HS • MBA (Masters) Major
Old-Timer: "It (his UD playing career) has gone really fast. All the older guys when I first came in - guys like Justin Burns and Trent Hurley - told me to enjoy it now because it goes so fast. Now I'm one of those older guys saying the same thing. I can't believe how fast it's gone. I am really blessed with everything that Delaware has given me and blessed for the opportunity that I have had. I am starting to feel older. I'm spending more time in the training room than I used to, but it's all good."
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: "I am excited for this opportunity with the offense we have. I feel like I have a more significant role this year and I'm looking to be a big part of the offense and contribute in a big way, whether it's blocking or catching the ball or running the ball. Whatever it is, I am trying to contribute to the best of my ability and do whatever they ask me to do. The sky is the limit for us and we are thinking big things for this season."
Business to Business: (Yocum finished his undergraduate degree in business management in December, 2016 and began MBA graduate classes this past spring) "It's going well. Actually it's very similar to what I took as an undergraduate but obviously a lot more conceptual and challenging. It's less lecture-based but more conceptual learning and applying these skills you are learning to a real business-world example. It's very beneficial and I am learning a lot. Things are still open for me but I would like to get into strategic leadership or international business."
What's Ahead: "I will receive my MBA degree in May and hopefully I will be working somewhere (next year). I'm keeping my options open and seeing what pans out within the next few months. Hopefully I will have a decent job and go from there. My ultimate dream is to be a CEO and run a business. That's at the top of my list and that's what I'm striving for."
Piano Man: "I really enjoy my time hanging out with teammates and close friends - I'm a big fan of that. On the side, I taught myself how to play the piano. I really enjoy music, country music, and any kind of music really. Whether it's listening or playing, music helps me get away from things and puts you somewhere else. I get to play the piano on and off, but it gets hard with such a busy schedule. I don't have my keyboard here on campus anymore but every time I am up in the dorms I usually get a quick play session in with (UD junior offensive tackle) Jethro Pepe. We like to jam before we all go to bed."
