NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware cross country team opens its 2017 season this weekend as the Blue Hens will compete in a pair of meets at the Lehigh Invitational and Elon Opener.
UD begins its campaign on Friday at the Lehigh Invitational on the Mountain Hawks' Goodman Campus Course. The meet, which also features Division I schools West Virginia, Rutgers, NJIT, LIU Brooklyn, Fairleigh Dickinson and La Salle, will begin at 6:15 p.m. The Blue Hens will then travel south to compete in the Elon Opener on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. in Elon, N.C.
Delaware, led by head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith, returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad that captured the Lehigh Invitational title, posted two second place finishes, and placed sixth in both the CAA and ECAC Championships.
Sophomore Mackenzie Jones returns for the Blue Hens after earning the team's MVP and Outstanding Rookie awards last season, when she was the squad's top finisher in six meets including coming in third in the Lehigh Invitational and placing fourth in the Delaware Invitational. Also returning for Delaware is senior Liz McGroarty, who was the team's top finisher in the ECAC Championships, and junior Molly Doyle, the squad's Most Improved Runner in 2016.
Sophomores Analise Kaminski and Valerie Romero, who competed in all but one meet last season, and Stephanie Bazan and Emily Paolucci, who participated in all but two, are also back for the Blue Hens.
Following this weekend's action, the Blue Hens host the first of two home meets on Sept. 16 by competing in the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
