NEWARK, Del. – Mike Keogh, the current University of Delaware men's and women's golf assistant coach and recruiting coordinator who served the previous 16 years as UD men's golf head coach, has announced that he will retire following the 2017 fall season.
Keogh, 67, led the Blue Hen men's golf program from 2001-17 before getting promoted to his full-time assistant coaching position in May.
"It has been a great honor to continue Scotty Duncan's legacy - he had a fantastic run, and so did I,” Keogh said. “It was an honor to represent the Delaware golf program and the University as a whole during the past 16 years, and I will continue to support the program as a proud alumnus. I would like to thank the Blue Hen players, assistant coaches and administrators who made my tenure an incredible experience.”
During his 16 seasons at the helm of the men's program, Keogh led his teams to 130 tournament top-10 finishes, including 16 team titles. His 2012-13 squad, which posted six top-five finishes on the year, tied for its highest Colonial Athletic Association Tournament showing with a fifth place finish. Keogh's 2005-06 squad also placed fifth at the CAA Tournament.
Keogh was named the 2015 CAA Coach of the Year after guiding a young squad to four second place finishes and a sixth place result at the league championship. The Blue Hens featured four players who carded a round in the 60's, while 10 players posted top-10 individual finishes.
“Mike has given so much to this program over many years and has certainly earned this time to spend on retirement with his expanding family,” said Jenn Judy, UD Associate Athletic Director, Student Services and Sport Administration. “Our Blue Hens family will miss him, and look forward to seeing Mike continue to support UD and the golf programs as a proud alum.”
Throughout his tenure at Delaware, Keogh coached two conference tournament champions and NCAA Tournament participants in Justin Martinson (2010) and Greg Matthias (2012). Martinson has played professionally on the Web.com Tour and NGA Pro Golf Tour while Joey McLister, who enjoyed a record-breaking career for the Blue Hens in 2004-07, played on the Web.com Tour and competed in two PGA Tour events.
Keogh led Delaware to its most successful season in 2009-10, as the Blue Hens won a school-record four consecutive tournaments during the fall of 2009. Additionally Keogh oversaw an incredible season by Martinson, who became the first UD golfer to win a conference title by earning medalist honors at the CAA Tournament. Martinson, who set a Blue Hen single season record for lowest average round, finished 13th at the NCAA Regionals and won two other tournaments on the year.
Most recently, Keogh's 2016-17 squad featured six players with a stroke average under 75.00 for the first time in school history.
Keogh is a 1973 Delaware graduate who lettered for the golf team in 1972 under legendary head coach Scott Duncan, and formerly served as an English teacher at Newark High School. He and his wife, Kathy, reside in Newark and have two children.
Registration is still open for the Scotty Duncan Memorial/Alumni and Friends of Delaware Golf Outing, which will be held at White Clay Creek Country Club on Monday, Oct. 2.
