RICHMOND, Va. – University of Delaware middle hitter Julia Hayes was named the CAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following two outstanding performances in the Blue Hens' opening conference matches.
Hayes, a redshirt freshman from Union, N.J. (Union Catholic), recorded a career-high nine blocks during Delaware's five-set victory at William & Mary on Thursday. She then again led all players by posting nine more blocks in the five-set loss at Elon on Saturday. Those two efforts are the two highest block totals by a Blue Hen this season.
Hayes also slammed four kills against the Tribe and five vs. the Phoenix, finishing the week with nine kills against just two errors for a .350 hitting percentage. She has started nine matches on the year, currently ranking second on the team with 34 blocks and tied for sixth with 23 kills.
Hayes is the second Blue Hen in as many weeks to win a conference award, as Maria Bellinger was tabbed CAA Offensive Player of the Week last Monday.
Delaware (3-9, 1-1 CAA) opens its home schedule this weekend by hosting Northeastern on Friday at 5 p.m. and Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center.
