RICHMOND, Va. – The Blue Hens were predicted to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll, as announced Thursday by the league.
Additionally, junior Samone DeFreese was picked as a Preseason All-CAA Second Team honoree.
James Madison was predicted to win it all in 2019 with 79 points and seven first place votes according to a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. Behind the Dukes was Drexel (71; 2) while two-time defending champion Elon was tied for third with Delaware with 61 points. Northeastern garnered 52 points for fifth place while William & Mary was sixth with 37 points and Towson was eighth with 26 points. Hofstra (22) and the College of Charleston (10) rounding out voting in ninth and 10th places, respectively.
Under second-year head coach Natasha Adair, the Hens look to build upon a 20-win season from a year ago that saw Delaware reach the Postseason WNIT for the eighth time in program history. UD returns four starters and 10 letter winners from last season but will be without 2018 CAA Player of the Year Nicole Enabosi, who is recovering from a torn ACL.
DeFreese, a starter a season ago and two-time letter winner for Delaware, saw action in all 32 games last year and was ranked 11th in the CAA with 7.4 rebounds per game, 18th with 30.5 minutes played and 19th with 11.3 points per. The forward logged 19 games with double-digit scoring efforts and seven games with double-digit rebounds with six total double doubles.
James Madison's Kamiah Smalls was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
Conference play tips off on Friday, January 4 as the Blue Hens welcome James Madison to the Newark. The conference season will also end at the Bob Carpenter Center as all 10 league teams will head to Newark for the 2019 CAA Women's Basketball Championship, hosted March 13-16 by the University of Delaware.
