Blue Hens’ Run Ends in CAA Quarterfinals Loss to Hofstra, 1-0

BOSTON, Mass. – Having been unbeaten in the final three games of the regular season, the University of Delaware women's soccer program had plenty of momentum coming into the 2018 CAA Tournament.
That momentum carried into the early parts of the Blue Hens' quarterfinals against the defending league champions, Hofstra. However, it was the Pride who was able to capitalize on their opportunities and pull out the 1-0 win in the CAA quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
It was the ninth time in the final 11 games of the season that a game was decided by one goal or less for the Blue Hens. Delaware allowed one goal or less in nine of its 18 games this fall.
Freshman Kamryn Stablein had a huge game, finishing with seven saves, the second most of the year for the youngster. All-CAA honorees Riley Dixon and Toni Starova both fired off two shots to lead the offensive attack for the Blue Hens.
Both teams battled for possession early on, but it was Dixon who began to put the pressure on the Pride defense. In the 15thminute, she nearly gave Delaware a lead when she ripped a left footed shot from about 20 yards out, but it caromed off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Less than 10 minutes later, Starova would get loose down the right sideline and nearly had a one-on-one breakaway, but was taken down just outside the box before the scoring chance could unfold.
The Pride would finally strike in the 32ndminute, gathering a loose ball off a rebound and finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
Stablein and the Delaware defense would hold strong, keeping the game at 1-0 to try and allow the Blue Hen counterattack to find opportunities, but the Pride defense held strong, preserving the 1-0 shutout and advancing to the CAA semifinals.
Quotable
"Today was the epitome of a hard-fought tournament game. Hats off to Hofstra. They are a seasoned tourney team and certainly played like it. We came out strong, had several chances in the first half and were unlucky to not come away with anything. When you're playing a seasoned conference champ, you can't afford to squander those opportunities. That being said, I thought we showed the trademark "Delaware Fight" and I'm proud of how we competed." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
