NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team scored two early goals and held off a Northeastern charge in the final minutes as the Blue Hens earned a 2-1 victory over the Huskies Saturday on Senior Night at Grant Stadium.
Delaware (5-9-1, 4-3-1 CAA) has secured the fourth seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament, and will host a quarterfinal match next Saturday. The Blue Hens will take on the fifth seed, which will be either William & Mary or Northeastern.
Delaware wasted little time in taking the lead, as Soren Frost collected a header from Ryan Mertz and scored from six yards out just 3:27 into the contest. A little over eight minutes later, John Schroeder sent a long ball toward the left side of the net, which was headed in by Timo Hummrich from eight yards out.
The Blue Hens had numerous chances later in the half and held a 10-5 shot advantage through 45 minutes, before taking a two-goal lead into the break.
The Huskies (5-8-1, 2-4-1 CAA) got on the board with 11:05 remaining when Moustapha Samb corralled a loose ball in front and found the back of the net to make it a one-goal game. However the Blue Hens would not allow the equalizer despite playing the final 15:18 a man down.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I thought the first half was excellent, and we played some really good soccer. I'm thrilled for Soren, that he was able to score a goal in his last regular season home game. Northeastern were very good and they came back while we played with a man down. But I was very happy with the resolve we had to get the three points."
"There are a lot of accolades with that senior group. We needed their composure and experience tonight. They've won championships and been to the NCAA Tournament, and I thought tonight at the end when we needed them, they were stalwarts."
