Blue Hens Drop Regular Season Finale at Penn, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware men's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 2-1 non-conference loss at Penn Tuesday night at Rhodes Field.
The Quakers (4-4-6) took the lead in the 24th minute when Jake Kohlbrenner collected a feed from Isaac McGinnis on the left side and ripped a shot over UD goalkeeper Blai Palmi for the first goal of the match.
Delaware (5-10-1) pulled even just 2:16 into the second half when the Blue Hens were awarded a penalty kick following a Penn handball in the box. Palmi raced the length of the field to take the penalty, and delivered a quality strike into the top right corner of the net to score his first career goal.
However Penn went back in front in the 74th minute as Matt Leigh took a cross from Erumuse Momoh and scored from six yards out for the game-winner.
Delaware, which will be the fourth seed in the CAA Tournament, will next host fifth-seeded William & Mary on Saturday at Grant Stadium at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal match. The winner will advance to the semifinals the following Friday against top-seeded James Madison in Harrisonburg.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I'm happy with the squad's performance tonight. I thought we played some very good soccer and had a lot of possession. Heading into the conference quarterfinal this weekend, I was happy with the way we played."
"Blai (Palmi) is the best striker of a dead ball on our squad, so I'm really not surprised that he put that away in the fashion that he did. That was a terrific penalty."
