RICHMOND, Va. – Five-time defending champion Delaware will host the 2018 CAA Field Hockey Championship after earning the top seed with an unbeaten conference record for the third straight season. William & Mary, Northeastern and James Madison also clinched berths in the championship field following the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday.
Delaware (12-6, 6-0 CAA), currently ranked No. 16 in the NFHCA poll, completed league play with a perfect 6-0 record. The Blue Hens have won five consecutive CAA titles and are riding a 24-game win streak in CAA regular season and tournament contests. The Blue Hens clinched the top seed on Friday, Oct. 26, in their 4-3 victory over Northeastern. Sunday's win over Hofstra gave the Blue Hens sole possession of the regular season title.
Â
Second-seeded William & Mary (9-7, 5-1 CAA) clinched the No. 2 seed, finishing 5-1 in league play for the second time in three years after defeating James Madison, 5-4, in a thrilling overtime match on Sunday in Harrisonburg, Va. The Tribe reached the championship game last season, falling to Delaware 3-0.
Â
Northeastern (8-10, 4-2 CAA) secured the No. 3 seed with the Huskies' 3-1 win over Drexel on Sunday. The third-place finish is Northeastern's best since the 2014 season when the Huskies went 5-1 in league play to win the regular season title.
Â
James Madison (6-11, 2-4 CAA) clinched the No. 4 seed after emerging from a three-team tiebreak with Drexel and Hofstra. The Dukes finished the season even in goal differential in CAA games, while Drexel completed the season with a minus-5 differential and Hofstra was at minus-11. James Madison has now reached the postseason in five straight seasons and has reached the CAA Championship game in three of the last four seasons.
Â
