NEWARK, Del. – Delaware jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead and used a strong defensive effort throughout the game as the Blue Hens cruised to a 70-40 victory over Division II neighbor Wilmington University Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens, who won their fourth straight game, did not trail while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and holding the Wildcats to a 26.6 percent effort.
Freshman Ithiel Horton led Delaware with a game-high 14 points, Eric Carter added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Kevin Anderson contributed 10 points and seven boards. Dawson Grinnage paced Wilmington with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Blue Hens scored the first eight points of the game, and pushed the margin to 22-6 midway through the period on a pair of Jacob Cushing free throws. Darian Bryant then beat the first half buzzer with a fastbreak layup to give Delaware a 43-20 advantage at the break.
UD led 44-26 with 14 minutes to play after both teams started the second half cold from the floor, but the Blue Hens scored the next 15 points over a five-minute stretch to put the game away.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"Today was a great opportunity for basketball in the state of Delaware. This gives us momentum heading into a big weekend. To take care of business, going 4-1 with two wins on the road, gives us confidence heading into Friday night. I've been happy with our defensive effort; we've done a really good job guarding teams and staying true to our principles on the defensive end. We've been sloppy with the basketball, which is an area that's always been a key for me. We've got to be better at valuing the basketball as our competition level increases."
Game Notes:
• Delaware has won four straight games for the first time since December, 2017
• The Blue Hens are 4-1 for the first time since 2003-04
• UD allowed its fewest points since a 66-34 win over Howard on Nov. 19, 2010
• Horton has reached double figures in four of his first five games
• Delaware has not trailed in each of its last three contests
