NEWARK, Del. – UNCG used a key 19-3 run midway through the second half to pull away and post an 84-65 victory over Delaware Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (4-2) trailed by just four points at 53-49 following an Eric Carter layup with 14:15 remaining, but the Spartans (5-1) scored the next nine points to extend the margin to 62-49. Ithiel Horton answered with a three-pointer Delaware, but UNCG countered with a 10-0 run to put the game away.
Horton led all scorers with a season-high 18 points for Delaware, while fellow freshman Matt Veretto also established a season-best by pouring in 15 points off the bench. Eric Carter contributed 14 points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while Darian Bryant was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points.
Kyrin Galloway and Francis Alonso paced UNCG with 16 points apiece, while Eric Hamilton and Isaiah Miller each added 10 on the night. The Spartans shot 50.9 percent from the field, including 58.6 percent in the final 20 minutes.
UNCG jumped out to an early 15-6 advantage and eventually pushed the margin to 27-14 with six minutes left in the half. The Blue Hens were still down 31-19 but closed the period on a 16-5 run to pull within a point at the break.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"We battled in the first half tonight, but got a little out of character in the second half. We struggled to score, and didn't dig in enough on the defensive end. We missed some shots but credit their defense, that's a good basketball team. The freshmen have been really good and can score the basketball, and they're starting to understand our system. Both guys did some really good things and that will only help them moving forward."
Game Notes:
• Delaware had its four-game winning streak snapped
• UNCG won its fourth in a row
• Carter has reached double figures in all six games this year
• Horton has scored in double digits in four straight games
• UNCG defeated the Blue Hens for the second consecutive year
• The game was part of the Delaware Invitational
