NEWARK, Del. – Delaware State guard Kevin Larkin scored on a putback layup with three seconds remaining as Delaware State pulled out a 73-71 win over Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Hornets (3-8) led by seven points with 2:14 remaining, but Delaware (8-5) rallied with a seven-point run to pull even. Ryan Allen made a steal and hit a layup to make it a five-point game, and after Matt Veretto converted a baseline layup, Ithiel Horton tied the game with a clutch three-pointer from the right wing with 18 seconds to play.
Following a time out Delaware State's Pinky Wiley missed a three-pointer, but Larkin grabbed the rebound in the paint and scored a layup for the winning basket. Horton's last second three-point attempt from 30 feet then hit off the back rim.
Eric Carter had another huge game to lead the Blue Hens, finishing with a game-high 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting and tying his career-high with 15 rebounds. Veretto contributed 13 points on the night, Kevin Anderson finished with 11 points and five assists, and Allen scored 10 points while making his first home appearance of the year.
Larkin scored 22 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds for Delaware State, while Saleik Edwards added 18 points.
The Hornets shot just 39.7 percent from the floor but knocked down 13 of 27 three-point attempts. Delaware, which entered the game ranked ninth nationally in three-point shooting, went just 6 of 30 from behind the arc.
Delaware State took a four-point lead into the half and did not trail in the second stanza. The Blue Hens pulled even at 53-53 on two Carter free throws, but the Hornets stretched their lead back to seven in the final minutes before UD's late run.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"We've got to go back to the drawing board defensively, we're not a very good defensive team right now. Give them all the credit in the world, they were fabulous. They made big shot after big shot. But on our home floor we've got to be better defensively, and dig in and get stops when we need to. We allowed them to get confident, and you can't do that. We just didn't have enough fight, enough toughness, enough focus, and we've got to be able to learn from this. There are a lot of games left, but this one stings."
Eric Carter
"They wanted it more tonight and the score proves that, plain and simple. We've got to play a lot better; we've got a long way to go. We didn't handle our business tonight, and we have to hold ourselves accountable after the break."
Game Notes:
• Carter notched his sixth double-double of the year and has reached double figures in all 13 games
• Veretto scored in double figures for the sixth time while Anderson reached double digits for the ninth time
• The Blue Hens held a 36-20 edge in points in the paint
• Delaware State snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Hens
