HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Justin Wright-Foreman scored 29 points as Hofstra jumped out to a big lead and never looked back in a 91-46 victory over Delaware Friday night at the Mack Sports Complex.
The Pride (11-3, 1-0 CAA) shot 53.4 percent from the field and knocked down 14 of 23 three-point attempts during the conference opener for both teams. The Blue Hens (8-6, 0-1 CAA) shot only 26.2 percent from the floor, including 5 of 24 from long distance.
Desure Buie added 17 points for Hofstra, while Tareq Coburn contributed 12 and Jacquil Taylor grabbed 12 rebounds. Hofstra held a 41-30 rebounding edge and enjoyed a 21-0 margin in points off turnovers.
Matt Veretto paced Delaware with nine points, while Ryan Allen and Kevin Anderson chipped in eight apiece. Eric Carter finished with seven points and eight rebounds, snapping his double figure scoring streak at 18 games.
Carter opened the scoring with a layup, but Hofstra quickly answered with 10 straight points to take control. The Pride was up 10 before a nine-point run extended Hofstra's margin to 31-12 with 7:38 left in the half.
The Pride led by as many as 31 in the period, and following a Jacob Cushing three-pointer, Jalen Ray closed the half with a layup to give Hofstra a 48-18 advantage at the break.
The Pride then scored the first eight points of the second half and was never threatened the rest of the way.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"CAA play is really tough, and we lost to a good team tonight. We have to do some soul-searching. Hofstra is really talented, and we let them get confident. We didn't have the fight and competitiveness we needed, and our young guys are learning quickly that this is a really good league. This only counts as one loss, we need to learn from it and get back to practice tomorrow."
Darian Bryant
"We've got to be tougher, especially on the road in the conference. We have to compete and fight back, and get back to the team we were at the beginning of the season."
