TAMPA, Fla. – Graduation is going to have to wait.
Senior Liz McGroarty of the University of Delaware track & field team is going to have to miss Saturday's ceremonies, and the Glen Mills, Pa. native is ok with that.
McGroarty raced to a school record breaking time of 4:19.52 in the 1500m at the NCAA East Prelims on Thursday afternoon, locking up a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday in Tampa, Fla.
She becomes the first Blue Hen runner to ever reach the NCAA Quarterfinals.
No Delaware runner had ever broken the 4:20 barrier in the 1500m prior to this year. McGroarty has now done it in consecutive meets. Prior to the NCAA East Prelims performance, she ran 4:19.92 at ECAC Championships.
Next up is a chance to punch a ticket to NCAA Championships in Oregon. That comes on Saturday at 1:15 pm. 24 student-athletes will race, the top 12 will advance to Eugene.
