Blue Hens Battle, But Fall to Monmouth, 3-1, In Home Opener

NEWARK, Del. – There's a famous quote that reads, "adversity does not build character, it reveals it."
The University of Delaware women's soccer team is learning all about that quote in the early part of the 2018 season as the Blue Hens have suffered key injuries throughout the first four games. However, the Blue Hens showed that hunger that is listed as one of their four core values in Sunday's home opener, battling a tough Monmouth team, but ultimately falling 3-1 at Grant Stadium.
Monmouth, who has won double-digit games in four of the past five seasons, used a late two-goal spurt to come away with the victory.
Junior Dani Kabat scored the Blue Hens' first goal of the season and the fourth of her career, when she gathered a loose ball from about 30 yards out and lifted a shot over the Monmouth keeper and into the top of the net for a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest.
The Hawks were able to get on the board in the 20thminute when a scramble in front happened and they knocked a point blank shot into the back of the net. Possession would stay on the Delaware's side much of the first half and with about five minutes left in the half, Sofia Munn gathered a loose ball and found the left foot of Arna Anthorsdottir, who blasted a shot that hit the post as the game remained tied at half.
Monmouth would get two late goals, both in the final 20 minutes, to pull off the victory.
Quotable
"I thought we played well. I thought the first half was fairly one sided and we showed good fight. But what happened in the game is going to happen when you're battling the numbers game like we are right now with our roster. When we're missing key players and down numbers overall, then you end up losing intensity and energy down the stretch, which is what happened today." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"I thought we played really hard, the effort was definitely there and I'm proud of the girls for continuing to battle when we've faced the adversity that we have so far this year." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
