NEWARK, Del. – Not even Mother Nature could stop the University of Delaware women's soccer team from getting its first win of the 2018 season.
Despite a lightning delay to start the game and a constant rain falling throughout the night, the Blue Hens used an energized start, a second shutout of the year from freshman Kamryn Stablein and an early goal from senior Riley Curtin en route to a 1-0 win over a potent squad from Lafayette.
From the opening whistle, the Blue Hens looked energized and hungry, jumping on the Leopards early.
Less than five minutes into the game, Curtin saw an opportunity deep in Lafayette territory when a bad pass was loose in front, she made a sprint to the ball, beat the Leopards keeper to it and spun to fire home her first goal of 2018. It was the the fourth goal of her career and first since 2015.
Lafayette, who entered the contest having outscored their first three opponents by a tally of 9-1, tried to climb back in it, but Delaware continued to pressure and dominate possession for much of the first half.
Delaware would continue to pepper the goal, firing off 11 shots in the first 45 and taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Leopards would make a push with a few chances deep into Blue Hen territory, but nothing was doing against a stifling effort from Delaware's back line.
Stabelin was phenomenal in net, including the second penalty kick stop of her season, when she knocked down and gathered Lafayette's attempt with under 30 minutes to play in the contest.
Delaware would continue to dominate possession for the final 20 minutes and powered its way to the 1-0 victory.

"I think all year long we've had little victories in every game. I think we've played pretty well and have been unlucky to not get the results. We've definitely faced our share of adversity, but this win was absolutely well deserved for this group." Head Coach Mike Barroquiero
"This group is really resilient. There's two ways that you can approach adversity and that's to either motivate you or to scare you and prohibit your ability to grow. These kids have taken adversity and pushed each other to work harder." Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"We've dealt with a lot early on and I think you could almost say that we played with a little anger and hunger in us. We came out with a different level of energy tonight and it definitely helped us get the win tonight." Senior Riley Curtin
