NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore forward Lotte de Koning recorded her second career hat trick Thursday afternoon as the No. 13 Blue Hens topped Richmond, 7-2, at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
De Koning led Delaware (4-3) with three goals while senior Greta Nauck registered two goals and an assist for the Hens. Freshmen Tessa Verweijen and Pia Freudenberger also tallied goals. Verweijen added an assist for three points.
The Blue Hens built an early lead and led 3-0 at the halftime break following goals from Verweijen, De Koning and Nauck.
De Koning added two more while Freudenberger capitalized on a penalty stroke and Nauck rocketed in a shot high into the back of the net for the 7-1 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Freshman Lizzie Gaebel saw her second start between the pipes and collected one save with one goal allowed in 58 minutes. Classmate Becca Harbert came in in relief and posted two saves with one goal allowed in 12 minutes of play.
Steffie Bongers and Elise Zwicklbauer each notched a goal for the Spiders (2-5) while Emily Braunewell logged five saves.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"We knew that we had opportunities against Richmond. They are a young team and have a first-year head coach who is building her program. To get this game in [with Hurricane Florence coming] allows both teams to further develop before we begin conference play. We are still putting the puzzle pieces together and this is another game for us to see who can play better together and who should play where. We need to continue to work on finishing and building the attack. It was beautiful that we had different people scoring and sharing the ball today. Winning is always fun and the way we did it today provided more of an opportunity to connect and grow stronger.
Sophomore Lotte de Koning
"I think we connected better as a team today and overall we were better with our scoring mentality and finishing. That is something we've lacked recently. It's been fun seeing everyone improve and our game is improving every day. At the end of the day, I don't care who scores. We put seven in today and some were mine, but others had some as well. It's always fun to score a lot regardless of who is the one on the scoresheet."
