Hummrich Scores Twice, Morton Sets Wins Record in Blue Hens’ 2-1 Overtime Victory Over Charleston

NEWARK, Del. – Blue Hen freshman Timo Hummrich scored the first two goals of his career, including the game-winner in overtime, as the University of Delaware men's soccer team earned a thrilling 2-1 victory over the College of Charleston in both teams' CAA opener Saturday night at Grant Stadium.
After the teams were knotted at 1-1 through regulation, the Blue Hens (2-5, 1-0 CAA) wasted little time in scoring during the first overtime session, finding the back of the net just 1:46 into the period. Jake Steinberg sent a low cross from the right side to Hummrich, who headed a shot at the Charleston net. A Cougars defender blocked the shot, but Hummrich collected the rebound and deposited the ball into the lower left corner to set off the UD celebration.
The victory was the 26th in goal for Blue Hen senior keeper Todd Morton, setting the school record for wins by a goalkeeper. Morton had been tied with Borja Barbero, who won 25 matches from 2013-14.
Charleston (3-4-1, 0-1 CAA) struck first in the 12th minute off a free kick by Jake Nicholson, as Tucker Heffron scored on a header from 12 yards out. However the Blue Hens tied the game in the 37th minute when Hummrich scored his first goal of the night on a header off a corner kick from Arno Masson-Viale.
Delaware then dominated play during the second half, but could not find the back of the net until Hummrich's game-winner early in overtime. The Blue Hens held a commanding 19-5 shot advantage and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks over the Cougars.
Morton made three saves during his record-breaking victory, while Treston Kederer stopped six shots in the Charleston goal.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I'm really happy for the group. We had all the excuses tonight to fold up the tent. We missed a penalty kick, we got an injury from one of our key players, and were missing a couple of people through injury. So come at the hour and come at the man, and for Timo to come up with the two goals in our conference game is critical and I'm thrilled for him and the program."
Timo Hummrich (on his game-winning goal)
"We played on the right hand side and when I saw the ball come through I thought at first to go on the first post, but I saw the defenders occupied that space so I dropped off. I screamed at my teammate to pass me the ball right there and I scored on the second ball. It is an amazing feeling, for sure one of the best feelings I have ever had."
Todd Morton (on setting the school wins record)
"It means a lot, I've been here awhile and now it's my fifth year. From freshman year to now I have put in a ton of work to try and improve my game and improve the team, and this is my reward. I'm really happy about it but we have to keep working from here. The win is massive; these games are must wins for us. It's a brand new season with conference starting, and we'll take this one game at a time. Fortunately we had a good result tonight and as we push on those are the games we have to be winning."
