NEWARK, Del. – The No. 19 Blue Hens scored first but were unable to hold on as No. 17 Rutgers picked up the 2-1 victory over Delaware at Fred P. Rullo Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Femke Strien capitalized on a penalty corner in the 12th minute off a tip-in from classmate Lotte de Koning.
The Scarlet Knights responded almost immediately as Linde van Schaik tied things in the 17th minute off a penalty corner. Rutgers took the 2-1 advantage just after halftime as Kassidy Shetler put one in in the 37th minute.
Sydney Rhodes collected one save in 70 minutes of action as Delaware falls to 5-6 on the year.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"The outcome isn't what we wanted, but we executed portions of our game plan well today and also saw growth in a number of players which will help us grow our depth chart as we continue CAA play. We didn't connect as well as we did on Friday and that likely was the difference between a win and a loss."
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware outshot Rutgers, 10-5, and also held the 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• Friday, October 5 – No. 19 Delaware at James Madison – 6 p.m. – JMU Field Hockey Complex (Harrisonburg, Va.)
• Friday, October 12 – No. 15 Virginia at No. 19 Delaware – 5 p.m. – Fred P. Rullo Stadium (Newark, Del.)
• Sunday, October 14 – Penn at No. 19 Delaware – 1 p.m. – Fred P. Rullo Stadium (Newark, Del.)
