Delaware Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Columbia in Blue Hen Invitational Finale

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Columbia on Saturday afternoon to close out play at the Blue Hen Invitational.
Delaware (5-4) took a two sets to one lead but the Lions (3-3) rallied to capture the final two sets to defeat the Blue Hens by set scores of 25-20, 15-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-10.
Maria Bellinger paced the Blue Hen attack with 19 kills on the afternoon, while Bailey Pearlman added 11 and Cailey Bracken chipped in nine. Courtnie Roberts handed out 42 assists and made 13 digs to post a double-double, while Bracken also had 13 digs and Andie Hanus led the defensive effort with 20 digs.
Julia Hayes and Sonja Vukosavljevic each recorded four blocks at the net while Bracken, Roberts and Pearlman added three apiece.
Delaware dropped the opening set, but rallied back to dominate the second set and never trailed in the third frame. After dropping the fourth set the Blue Hens jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth, but Columbia rallied back to post the victory.

The Blue Hens close out their non-conference slate next weekend at the Stony Brook Invitational against Bryant, Colgate and the host Seawolves.
