WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Blue Hens All-American Karen Emas Borbee '84 is set to receive the 2019 Tewaaraton Legends Award, as announced by The Tewaaraton Foundation this weekend.
Emas Borbee will officially accept her award as a part of the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 30, 2019 in Washington, D.C.
The Tewaaraton Legends Award, which is given by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWCLA), annually honors recipients who played college lacrosse prior to 2001, the first year in which the Tewaaraton Award was presented.
"Karen played an amazing role in developing the Delaware women's lacrosse legacy," remarked current Delaware head coach Kateri Linville. "One of our most decorated alumnae and teammates, Karen has and continues to exude a passion for the game and a quiet confidence in her pursuit of excellence. Today, Karen is an amazing mentor, leader and coach. Her Blue Hen family is proud to join the lacrosse community in honoring her steadfast contributions, unparalleled performance and outstanding leadership!"
One of the greatest scorers in women's lacrosse history and a member of the NCAA's 25th Anniversary Team for women's lacrosse, Emas Borbee still holds the NCAA record for goals per game (4.65) and ranks second in points per game (6.23), while winning three national titles (two AIAW and one NCAA) during her three-time All-American career with the Blue Hens.
Also a member of the US Lacrosse and University of Delaware Halls of Fame, Emas Borbee followed a nine-year US Team playing career as Swarthmore's head coach, heading into her 26th season this spring with more than 200 career wins.
"A natural talent with outstanding stick work, Karen was not only a prolific scorer but also an extremely unselfish player, leading her team in assists two of her four years and ending the other two seasons as runner-up in that category," said former Delaware head coach Janet Smith. "She took genuine pride in her assists and setting up others for the goal. Karen was a dream for both coaches and teammates, a quiet leader by example. Her offensive acumen was unparalleled. Karen is most deserving of the 2019 Tewaaraton Women's Legend Award."
A 1984 honors graduate from the University of Delaware, Emas Borbee led the Hens to a combined record of 60-9-1 during her career.
