NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team will compete in five early season tournaments and play 21 home games as the Blue Hens announced their 2020 schedule on Thursday.
Delaware kicks off the season on Feb. 7-9 at the FGCU Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla, before also competing in tournaments at Incarnate Word (Feb. 14-16), Loyola Marymount (Feb. 21-23), George Mason (Feb. 28-Mar. 1) and Hampton/Norfolk State (Mar. 6-8).
The Blue Hens play open their home slate with a doubleheader against Coppin State on Mar. 14, one of 14 home dates at the Delaware Softball Diamond. UD welcomes CAA opponents Charleston (Mar. 28-29), Hofstra (Apr. 4-5), Elon (Apr. 18-19) and Drexel (May 1-2) to Newark, with road conference series at UNCW (Mar. 21-22), Towson (Apr. 11-12) and James Madison (Apr. 25-26).
"We return our entire infield and are deeper in the circle, so we have slowly amped up our competition. FGCU, Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State are all consistently on the bubble of making the NCAA Tournament," head coach Jen Steele said.
"If was also be fun to travel to the home states of some of our athletes. Kailey (Christian) and Emily (Winburn) will have a lot of fun pitching at FGCU and Ali (Davis), Karolina (Flores) and Maddi (Marsh) are looking forward to playing back home in California during their final season. The West Coast has been good to us, also yielding Brittney (Mendoza) and Grace (Rudolph), so getting back out there is important to our program."
Delaware returns seven starters and all three pitchers from last year's squad, including Second Team All-CAA honoree Hanna Garber and fellow CAA All-Rookie Team selection Brooke Glanden. Christian and Winburn are also expected to be key additions to the UD pitching staff.
