BROOKLINE, Mass. -Â Â There's something special about being close to home.Â
Â
You could see it from the start of the game that sophomore Sara D'Appolonia, who was playing just over 100 miles from her hometown in Maine, had a little something extra.Â
Â
That moment became even more special when D'Appolonia followed a shot from teammate Riley Dixon and put home the game-winner in overtime to give the University of Delaware women's soccer team another thrilling road victory, this time a 2-1 defeat of Northeastern on a chilly Thursday night outside of Boston.Â
Â
With the victory, the Blue Hens grabbed their ninth win, the highest single-season total since 2013 and their fourth conference victory, the highest in a season since 2011.Â
Â
Both D'Appolonia and redshirt freshman Anna Diffendal scored their third goals of the season on the night with Dixon picking up the lone assist for the Blue Hens.Â
Â
Defensively, Delaware has now held 16 of its past 20 opponents to one goal or less and has allowed just 10 goals in 14 games this fall.Â

What They Said
Â
"I'm certainly proud of our team. This was one of those CAA games that ages you 10 years. Northeastern is a GREAT team that can score goals in bunches so it made for a back and forth affair all night. With two teams so evenly matched, I'm proud of the fight and maturity that our group brought to find a way to win. We have a wonderful group of kids in this program and I couldn't be prouder of them." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"I'm so proud of this team! It's not easy traveling all day and turning around an playing the very next day. If there's any team that can earn a result like we did tonight, it's this one. This team is so unique and special We haven't won four games in the CAA since 2011, we matched that this evening. We talked about making history tonight and we did that. We're not done yet." – sophomore Sara D'Appolonia
"For me personally, I was so stoked to put the game away in front of my family. Being from Maine, it's not very often I get a fan section. I couldn't be more grateful to have the support system that I do. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn't for them. Shout out to my family, they mean so much and I love them so much. It was so great to see them." – sophomore Sara D'Appolonia
