LORETTO, Pa. – Delaware led by just a point at the break but was effective on both ends of the floor during the second half as the Blue Hens pulled away for a 79-64 win over Saint Francis Tuesday night at DeGol Arena.
Delaware, the only team in the nation with six wins, has tied its second best start in school history and the best since the 1998-99 squad opened with eight victories.
Nate Darling led the Blue Hens in scoring for the fifth game in a row with 28 points, as he finished 9 of 16 from the field and knocked down four three-pointers. Justyn Mutts posted his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kevin Anderson scored all but three of his 14 points after halftime.
Collin Goss was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points, while Ryan Allen had nine on the night.
Delaware jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead five minutes into the game, while three Darling free throws put the Blue Hens back in front by a point at 29-28 with 3:55 left in the half. Saint Francis countered with the next seven points, before Delaware closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to take a slim 38-37 advantage into the break.
After each team hit a bucket early in the second half Delaware took control by scoring the next 11 points, surging to a 51-39 lead on an Anderson jumper at the 15:51 mark.
Following a Red Flash basket, Delaware scored 11 of the next 13 points to extend the margin to 62-45 on a Darling triple midway through the period. The lead grew to 20 at 75-55 when Allen drilled a three with three minutes to play.
Delaware shot 55.4 percent from the field, including 62.1 percent in the second half, and finished 8 of 19 from behind the arc. Meanwhile the Blue Hens limited Saint Francis to 39.0 percent shooting, including just 4 of 22 from three-point range.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"I'm really proud of how we played defensively in the second half, we really locked in and made them work. We got a lot of contributions from different guys and were able to get into the flow offensively. Nate is a talented offensive player and can hit deep shots, and always makes the right plays on the floor. It's nice to be able to head back home 6-0, and hopefully everybody can come out and see us next Wednesday."
Collin Goss
"We're potent on the offensive end since everybody can run and shoot, which makes us pretty hard to guard. Becoming stronger and being a fifth-year guy has made it easier for me to get points down low."
