Late Goal Gives Hofstra 2-1 Win Over Blue Hens in CAA Quarterfinals
11/8/2019 3:38:00 PM | Men's Soccer
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Hofstra forward Matthew Vowinkel scored the game-winning goal with just 4:36 remaining as the Pride edged Delaware, 2-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Quarterfinal match Friday afternoon at JMU's Sentara Park.
The Blue Hens took the early lead when Marco de la Bandera scored his first career goal off assists from freshmen Jacob Rubini and Alvin Halley just 6:11 into the contest.
However the Pride answered just over four minutes later when Frederik Rieper found the back of the net with George O'Malley and Oscar Ramsay recording assists.
Neither team could generate quality scoring chances over the next 75 minutes until Hendrik Hebbeker slid a through ball to Vowinkel, who fired a low shot into the left corner of the goal to put Hofstra in front.
Delaware had a chance in the final minute when Mark Battle blasted a long shot from the left side, but Pride keeper Alex Ashton made a leaping catch and just kept the ball from crossing the line.
The Blue Hens held an 11-9 advantage in shots, although Hofstra had a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Renan Thomazo made five saves, including a pair of impressive stops in the early minutes, in the Delaware goal, while Ashton stopped two shots for the Pride.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"It was a heartbreaking way to lose so late like that. The lads were terrific today, considering we lost to the same team 5-0 just two weeks prior. I am so thankful for our senior class who all contributed and left everything out there. Our returners will grow from this postseason experience and I know we will be a stronger program next year for it."
