NEW YORK, N.Y. – It had been nearly 200 days since the University of Delaware track & field team laced up the spikes.
For the Blue Hens, they picked up right where they left off in their 2019-2020 indoor opener with four ECAC qualifying marks, top-10 times in school history and plenty of personal bests at the TCNJ Open at the New York Armory.
Redshirt junior Mackenzie Jones (5000m), senior Michaela Meyer (1000m and mile), junior Bethany Clement (weight throw) and sophomore Halimah Roberson (triple jump) all earned ECAC qualifying marks. In addition to the victories in four of those events, the Blue Hens also took home wins from Khamoy Farquharson (60m), Trinity Tapper (60m unseeded), Alyssa Armor (400m), Roshelle Leaks (long jump) and Myrissa McFolling-Young (shot put).
Meyer earned victories in the 1000m (2:55.33) and mile (4:56.87). while leading a top-three sweep for Delaware in each event. Jones' performance not only grabbed her a spot in the ECAC indoors, but also was the second-best time in school history at 17:09.81.
Clement unleashed a huge PR, besting her previously mark by nearly 10 feet. Her toss of 55' ¾" led the Blue Hens throws group that took four of the top-five marks in the weight throw. Roberson will return to ECACs for the second straight year after placing second last winter. Her leap of 39'4" was good for a top-three finish this past weekend.
McFolling-Young earned her first win of the year and 13th of her career in the shot put with freshman Gabrielle Holliday equaling her mark of 43'6".
What They Said
"I'm really pleased with our performances today. We wanted to have fun, support each other and get out some of the jitters before leaving for winter break. Many of our student-athletes earned personal bests, top-10 marks and ECAC qualifiers. This is a really hard-working, dedicated group. Our goal this season is to be better than the last, and so far, we are moving nicely in that direction." - head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith
