BALTIMORE, Md. – Blue Hen freshman Brittney Mendoza belted a grand slam as the University of Delaware softball team posted a 6-3 victory over UMBC on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (2-1) took the lead in the top of the second inning when Hanna Garber delivered a two-out bases loaded single to drive home Karolina Flores. Delaware then took control by scoring five times in the top of the third.
Brooke Glanden ripped a one-out double to rightcenter, while Flores and Halle Kisamore followed with walks to load the bases. Mendoza then drilled a pitch over the centerfield fence for her first career homer, extending the Blue Hens' advantage to 5-0.
Following a pitching change Chayanna Gallardo singled up the middle, and one out later she came around to score on a Garber double.
UMBC (0-1) got on the board in the bottom of fifth on an RBI single by Anna Lonchar, while Sierra Pierce added a run-scoring single to make it a 6-2 game.
The Retrievers looked to draw closer in the bottom of the sixth when they put two runners on base with one out, but UD leftfielder Sarah Bessel made a diving catch of a line drive and doubled the UMBC runner off second base to end the threat.
UMBC scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Pierce, but Maddi Marsh then retired Jenna Stupey on a groundout to first to seal the victory.
Garber finished with two hits for the Blue Hens, while starting pitcher Sarah Piening earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Marsh, who gave up one run on three hits in the final 1.2 frames, recorded the first save of her career.
