JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Delaware softball team concluded its weekend at the Jacksonville Classic on Sunday afternoon by posting a 6-1 victory over Harvard.
The Blue Hens (5-7) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Hanna Garber led off with a walk, advanced to second when Halle Kisamore was hit by a pitch, stole third, and scored on an RBI groundout by Brooke Glanden.
The Crimson (2-3) pulled even in the top of the second as Morgan Melito crossed the plate when Alyssa Saldana reached on a throwing error, but Delaware took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Ali Davis singled to centerfield to drive home Karolina Flores.
The Blue Hens then put the game away by pushing across four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kisamore led off the frame by reaching on an error, and after Glanden singled, the runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Anna Steinmetz.
Flores then walked to load the bases, before Brittney Mendoza drove home two runs with a double to leftfield. One out later Davis delivered a two-run single to center, making it a 6-1 game.
Harvard answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but the game was called in the middle of the frame due to a rain delay and unplayable field conditions, and the score reverted to the end of the fifth inning.
Davis finished 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead the UD attack, while Mendoza was also 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Maddi Marsh went the distance in the circle for the Blue Hens, allowing just one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks to earn her first win of the year.
