Blue Hens Take 17th-Ranked Hopkins To The Wire, Fall 12-10

BALTIMORE, Md. – Off to its best start since 2006, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse program clearly displayed the progress made over the past two years.
On Saturday, that progress was on display nationwide, taking one of the country's most historic programs to the wire, but a late spurt led the 17th-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins to a 12-10 win over the Blue Hens.
"We are disappointed with today's result, but very proud of our team's effort, intensity and competitiveness against a very good opponent," head coach Ben DeLuca said. "We dug ourselves a deep hole in the first quarter, but our guys stayed together, kept working and fought back late to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, we did not make enough plays to earn the win, particularly early and late in the game. We'll watch the tape, make corrections and continue to focus on our process as we prepare for another tough road text next week."
Offensively, senior captain Joe Eisele continued his hot streak, scoring four goals for the second straight game, while also adding an assist on the afternoon. Junior Charlie Kitchen scored for the 25thconsecutive game with two goals and one assist, while freshman Tye Kurtz added a goal and two assists.
Defensively, junior Matt DeLuca was outstanding once again, stopping 15 shots on the afternoon, marking the 11thstraight game with double-digit saves for the keeper. Freshman Owen Grant made his collegiate debut an impressive one with six caused turnovers, a single-game program record for a freshman.
The two teams traded goals in the opening two minutes, but Hopkins took an early lead on a four-goal burst to make it 6-2 with five minutes to play in the first half.
Delaware would score two of the next three goals heading into halftime with the Blue Jays leading 7-4.
The second half saw the Blue Hens respond with Kitchen and Eisele firing home two goals to make it a 7-6 game. After JHU got one back, Eisele again found the back of the net at the end of the third quarter to make it 8-7.
Delaware would keep momentum into the fourth, scoring three straight goals, including a man-down goal from Kurtz, to grab its first lead of the game at 10-8.
The lead would last into the final four minutes of the game when the Blue Hays got three straight goals in less than two minutes to take the 12-10 victory.
