NEWARK, Del. – With the conference season looming next weekend, it's always good to get experience in tight games.
The University of Delaware baseball team has that covered, playing in its seventh game decided by three runs or less on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in the finale of the 2019 Delaware Classic.
That conference season comes with momentum on the Blue Hens side, winning their fourth game in the past five in walk off fashion, 5-4, over West Chester. It was Chance DiFebbo's single in the bottom of the ninth to score Joseph Carpenter that gave Delaware the victory.
"It wasn't the prettiest of wins for us, but we were able to do enough to get the job done," head coach Jim Sherman said. "I was really impressed by the outings we got from our freshman, both on the mound and in the lineup. It was great to see them stepping up in big situations for us."
Carpenter's winning run capped off an outstanding offense day, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He was one of seven Blue Hens to notch a hit in the contest.
Freshman Joey Silan was terrific in his third collegiate start, scattering three hits and allowing just one earned run, while striking out five in six innings of work. Classmate Justin Tomovich picked up the win with two hitless innings, including four strikeouts.
"I thought both Silan and Tomovich were outstanding on the mound for us. They both threw a ton of strikes and really competed every pitch," Sherman added. "Carpenter had a good day at the plate, including the biggest hit of the game with the triple in the ninth. It was great to see Chance deliver in a key situation and give us the win."
Much like Saturday's game, it was a pitcher's duel from the start with Delaware striking first with a run in the second and West Chester tying with a run in the fifth.
Both starters would dominate, allowing just nine total baserunners in the first six innings of the contest.
West Chester would take advantage of free baserunners in the seventh to plate three runs, but Delaware responded right away, stringing together five singles, including RBIs from Carpenter, Jack Goan and Kevin Buglio to tie the game at 4-4.
The Rams would try to regain the lead in the eighth, but Tomovich pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam to keep the game even.
In the ninth, Carpenter would ignite a rally with a leadoff triple to deep right center. Two walks would load the bases and two pitches into DiFebbo's at-bat, he launched a single over a drawn in outfield to plate the game-winner.
