Blue Hens Drop Midweek Tilt to La Salle, 4-2

NEWARK, Del. – Close games have become a standard for the University of Delaware baseball team in 2019.
Tuesday at Bob Hannah Stadium was no different as the Blue Hens found themselves in yet another close game and came up just short, 4-2, to visiting La Salle University. It was the eighth game this year decided by three runs or less for Delaware.
"Today was a tough game for us. We got really good pitching on the mound and weren't able to take advantage of it on the offensive side," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We continue to find ourselves in a lot of games, but we haven't been able to capitalize. We had several chances in the late innings with runners on and we couldn't come up with the big hit when we needed it. We just have to keep grinding and approach this weekend as a whole new season with conference play starting."
Offensively, Erik Bowren had a season-high three hits, along with a run scored, while Joseph Carpenter continued to swing the bat well, driving in Delaware's only two runs.
On the mound, freshman Jack Dubecq scattered seven hits and three earned runs over 5.1 innings of work, while Winston Allen, Derek Wakeley and Justin Tomovich all had solid outings out of the bullpen.
"I really liked what we got out of our arms today. I thought all of them really gave us a chance to win and that's what we're looking for," Sherman added.
La Salle would strike first with single runs in the second and fourth innings, but Delaware would try to get a rally going when Jordan Hutchins drove a single up the middle and stole second and third with one out. The Blue Hens were unable to scratch out a run.
The Explorers added a run in the sixth, but the Blue Hens would again put together a rally in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. But again, La Salle was able to pitch out of the jam and preserve the 3-0 lead.
Delaware broke through in the eighth with Carpenter delivering a one-out, two-run triple to left field to make it a 3-2 game.
La Salle got one back in the ninth, but again the Blue Hens tried to rally, getting the lead off guy on, but were unable to get anymore as the Explorers secured the 4-2 victory.
