#10 Villanova Uses Second Half to Get Past Blue Hens, 17-9
3/2/2019 3:30:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
VILLANOVA, Pa. – With the first 4-0 start since 2008 under its belt, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse program knew it would get the toughest test of the year on Saturday.
That's exactly what they got with 10th-ranked Villanova using a big second half to come away with a 17-9 victory over the Blue Hens.
"Credit to Villanova, they proved they were the better team today. They dominated just about every single meaningful statistical category, spearheaded by a dominating performance at the FO dot," head coach Ben DeLuca said. "We're disappointed with our effort and execution today, specifically with our lack of discipline throughout the game."
Senior Dean DiSimone and freshman Tye Kurtz both notched hat tricks on the day to lead the offensive attack. Junior Charlie Kitchen found the goal for his 10thof the season and extended his goal streak to 22 straight games.
Junior Matt DeLuca had 15 more saves on the day, his 17thdouble-digit career performance and fifth this year.
"We will utilize this as a learning opportunity to improve and prepare for a quick turnaround prior to our upcoming midweek game," DeLuca added.
Kurtz got the scoring started when he took a pass from Kitchen and fired home his sixth goal of the year to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Nova responded with three straight, but DiSimone scored two goals within 90 seconds of each other to even the game at 3-3 after the first quarter.
The teams would trade goals back and forth for the next 10 minutes before the Wildcats got two goals from All-American candidate Matt Campbell in the final two minutes of the half to take an 8-6 lead into the break.
Villanova would flex its muscle in the second half, scoring six of the next seven goals to grab a 14-7 lead.
Kitchen and DiSmone would score in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats took home the 17-9 victory.
