ROCK HILL, S.C. – Being in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people can be a difficult challenge.
That was not the case for the University of Delaware track & field team, who competed at the Winthrop Invitational, a meet that no current Blue Hen had ever competed. Five victories, two ECAC qualifiers and plenty of personal bests later, the weekend was quite the success for the Blue Hens.
"I thought our team had a great weekend. It's always good to compete in new meets, it gave our girls a chance to compete against new teams and have some warmer conditions to work in. It was a big meet with over 1,200 student-athletes and 37 different teams, so it was a really great experience," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "I'm truly excited about the performances we put forth this weekend and can't wait to see what we can accomplish this spring."
Sophomores Susanna Weir (3000m steeplechase), Myrissa McFolling-Young (discus) and Halimah Roberson (triple jump) all took home victories during the meet, along with freshman Halima Scott (400m) and senior Ashley Bailey (pole vault)
Scott's time of 56.20 in the 400m bested the field and was the fifth-best mark in school history. It also was an ECAC qualifying time for the freshman. Her afternoon wasn't done as she teamed with Nadia Khoury, Alyssa Armor and Kai Starnes to clock in at 3:50.67 in the 4x400 relay, good for an ECAC qualifying mark.
Bailey grabbed her first victory of the spring, clearing 12' 3 ½" for the win.
McFolling-Young had a great weekend, grabbing two top-three finishes, first a third-place finish in the shot put (42'9") on Friday, followed by a win in the discus on Saturday.
Weir led a quarter of Blue Hens in the top-six of the steeplechase, clocking in with the second- best time in school history at 10:58.85.
Roberson and freshman Ruby Mullen grabbed two of the top-five spots in the triple jump with Roberson leading the pack with a leap of 39' 10 ¾".
