NEWARK, Del. – Jordan Hutchins belted a home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Delaware an early lead but the Blue Hens could not get much going offensively from there as UD dropped an 8-2 decision to Fairfield Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Hutchins crushed a pitch over the leftfield fence for his second homer of the season to put Delaware in front. Blue Hen starting pitcher Chris Ludman allowed just three hits through four scoreless frames on the mound, before Fairfield scored four times with two outs in the top of the fifth.
Tim Zeng delivered an RBI single to tie the game, and after two runs scored on a wild pitch and a dropped fly ball, Anthony Boselli capped the rally with a run-scoring double.
Delaware got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Brad Kaden led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a walk to Austin Colmery, advanced to third on a double play, and scored on a single to left by Erik Bowren.
However Jack Gethings ripped an RBI double in the top of the seventh for Fairfield, before the Stags put the game away in the ninth on a three-run homer by Boselli.
Bowren and Joseph Carpenter each finished 2 for 4 at the plate for the Blue Hens while Kevin Mohollen, Hutchins, Vinny Vaccone, Kaden and Colmery added a hit apiece.
Ludman took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings of work.
The teams conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 12 noon.
