ELON, N.C. – After waiting out the rain all afternoon Delaware split a doubleheader with Elon Saturday night at the Hunt Softball Park, winning the opener 5-1 before dropping a 3-2 verdict in the nightcap.
Delaware (18-21, 4-7 CAA) struck first in the opener during the top of the first inning as Hanna Garber led off with a single, moved to second on a Halle Kisamore single, stole third and scored on a single to centerfield by Anna Steinmetz.
Steinmetz then doubled home Garber in the top of the third, before Kisamore crossed the plate on a Brittney Mendoza groundout to give the Blue Hens a three-run cushion.
Elon (22-16-1, 6-5 CAA) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Megan White, and the Phoenix still had runners on second and third with nobody out. However Sarah Piening replaced Katie Stahre in the circle and retired the next three batters, two by strikeout, to stop the rally.
Mendoza then opened the top of the sixth with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Chayanna Gallardo, before Brooke Glanden belted her sixth home run of the season in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Kisamore, Glanden and Steinmetz each finished with two hits for the Blue Hens, while Garber crossed the plate twice. Piening picked up her 10th win of the season after allowing just two hits and striking out five during four innings of scoreless relief.
Elon took the early lead in the nightcap, as two runs scored on an infield single by Ally Repko in the bottom of the first.
Delaware got a run back in the second when Karolina Flores singled with two outs, advanced to second when Gallardo reached on an error, and scored on an RBI single to leftfield by Ali Davis.
The Blue Hens tied the game an inning later when Kisamore led off with a triple and scored on a one-out RBI single by Steinmetz. The game remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth, when Morgan Reich ripped a leadoff double and Repko delivered a two-out RBI single to put Elon in front.
Flores finished 2 for 3 at the plate for UD while Garber, Kisamore, Steinmetz and Davis added a hit apiece.
