Seventh Inning Rally Gives Blue Hens Doubleheader Split With UNCW

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning during the nightcap to pull out an improbable 6-5 victory as the Blue Hens split a CAA doubleheader with UNCW Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks earned a 7-3 victory in the first game of the day.

UNCW (23-23, 5-9 CAA) took a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh during the second game, and appeared to seal the victory when Jada Santiago belted a three-run homer.

However Delaware (19-23, 5-9 CAA) would not quit, as Karolina Flores led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle and Brittney Mendoza followed with a double off the fence in leftcenter. After Reyna de Jesus walked to load the bases, Flores crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Chayanna Gallardo to make it a 5-2 game.

Sarah Coyne then came to the plate as a pinch hitter and blasted a pitch over the wall in leftcenter for her first career homer as a Blue Hen to pull Delaware even.

Following UNCW's second pitching change of the inning, Hanna Garber belted a triple to rightcenter. Halle Kisamore then ripped a single to right, driving home Garber with the winning run and setting off the Blue Hen celebration.

The Seahawks had scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to open the scoring, before Anna Steinmetz singled home Miranda O'Donald in the bottom of the sixth for UD's first run of the contest.

Garber, Kisamore and Steinmetz each finished with two hits during the win, while Sarah Piening earned her 11th victory of the season with a complete game effort in the circle.

Janel Gamache and Dominique Travers hit homers as the Seahawks built a 7-0 lead in the opener, before Delaware scored its three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Mendoza delivered a bases loaded single and another run crossed the plate on a UNCW error.
