NEWARK, DEL. – The incoming class for the University of Delaware volleyball program received a big addition this week with the signing of Gabi Zelaya to join the Blue Hens this upcoming fall.
Zelaya, a 5-10 junior outside hitter from Tomball, Texas, comes to Delaware after spending the past two seasons at University of Houston. She will have two years of eligibility remaining when she joins the Blue Hens.
"We're extremely excited to have Gabi join our program," head coach Sara Matthews said. "She is ultra-competitive and will add so much to our gym. She is a terrific addition to our culture that knows what it means to work hard and grind it out. She comes from a volleyball family so her volleyball IQ will impact our program immediately. She is a tremendous addition to our Blue Hen family."
In her two seasons at Houston, she played in 48 matches, including 25 starts, piling up 259 kills (1.60 per set), 225 digs (1.37 per set), 31 blocks and 21 service aces. This past fall with the Cougars, Zelaya had nine matches with 10 or more kills.
In addition to her work on the court, she was a two-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honoree.
Prior to her time at Houston, she was a four-year letterwinner at Concordia Luthern High School, helping the Crusaders win the 2016 Class 6A State Championship, as well as two district championships and three appearances in the state tournament. She was a three-time team captain and four-time All-District and All-State selection. During her high school career, she totaled 2,115 kills, 1,451 digs and 252 service aces.
