Blue Hens’ Late Rally Falls Just Short in Liberty Bell Finals Against Lafayette

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For much of the 2019 University of Delaware baseball roster, they were stepping on the field that many of their childhood heroes had played at the major league level.

It was a night that they won't forget, even if the result wasn't what the Blue Hens had wanted.

A late rally by Delaware came up just short in the 2019 Liberty Bell Classic finals against Lafayette, ultimately falling 7-5 in midweek action on a beautiful Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Park.

"It was almost a flashback of last year with a tight game for most of the night, they had a big inning late and then we tried to rally, but credit to Lafayette for coming up with the hits and pitches when they needed them," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We just appreciate the opportunity to play here, it's really a great experience for our guys."

Junior Jack Goan continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the offensive attack, while Vinny Vaccone added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Blue Hens. Freshman Joseph Carpenter extended his on-base streak to 32 consecutive games and his hit streak to 19.

Freshman Jack Dubecq once again threw the ball well for the Blue Hens, allowing just four hits and one earned run in five innings of work.

"I thought Jack threw the ball well for us and really competed, but we weren't able to get enough going early on with the offense to counter that and our rally was just a little too late," Sherman added.

Dubecq locked in a battle with a handful of Lafayette hurlers early in the game with the Leopards getting the only run in the first five innings for either team in the bottom of the second.

Goan would even the score in the top of the sixth with a long double off the centerfield wall to score Vaccone, but Lafayette answered with a run of their own in the home half of the sixth.

Once again, Delaware would answer, tying the game in the eighth when Zach Lesher ripped an RBI single to score Vaccone.

Lafayette would string together three hits and two free baserunners in the eighth to plate five runs and take a 7-2 advantage into the ninth.

The Blue Hens wouldn't go quietly. Austin Colmery and Kevin Mohollen reached to lead off the inning. Jordan Hutchins delivered a one-out RBI single and Vaccone laced a two-out, two-RBI double into right field to quickly make it a 7-5 contest.

Lafayette would hold for the final out and the victory.
