NEWARK, Del. – There's no place like home.
The University of Delaware baseball team continues to prove that statement true, picking up its 12thwin at Bob Hannah Stadium on Wednesday night, flying past the Hawks of UM-Eastern Shore, 8-2 in non-conference action.
12 of the Blue Hens' 15 victories this spring have come at home and Delaware is now 5-1 in games played under the brand-new lights at Bob Hannah.
Five different Blue Hens had multi-hit performance to lead an offense that pounded out 13 hits on the night, while five different pitchers combined to come away with the win.
"I liked the energy we had tonight and I thought we had right from the beginning, which was great to see," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We need to continue to work on bringing that every night, particularly in these conference series coming up down the stretch."
Sophomore Zack Miller had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, including his second HR of the season. Senior Kevin Mohollen had two hits, a run scored and tied a season-high with three RBIs on the evening. Freshman Joseph Carpenter had two hits and two RBIs to extend his hit streak (20) and on-base streak (33), which both rank in the top-10 nationally among active streaks.
On the mound, sophomore Winston Allen picked up his second win of the year with three strong innings, while Justin Tomovich, CJ Schaible and Chance DiFebbo all had scoreless outings for the Blue Hens.
"This was one of our better team games of the year with a bunch of guys having good at-bats throughout the night," Sherman added. "The pitchers threw the ball well all night. They only had 11 baserunners all night and I thought we did a pretty good job of minimalizing any chance they tried to put together."
Mohollen got things started from the first at-bat with a leadoff single and after a walk and wild pitch, came around to score on a throwing error for the game's first run. Three pitches later, Carpenter launched a double into right center to plate Erik Bowren and give Delaware a 2-0 cushion.
The Blue Hens added three more runs in the home half of the second with RBIs from Mohollen, Jordan Hutchins and Carpenter to push the advantage to 5-0.
UMES would scratch a run out in the third, but Miller responded by launching the third pitch of the home half of the inning over the left field fence to make it a 6-1 lead.
The Hawks would add another run in the fourth, but a two-run single by Mohollen in the fifth would extend the Blue Hens' lead to 8-2.
Tomovich, Schaible and DiFebbo would not allow a UMES runner past second base in the final four innings en route to the victory.
