WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Delaware earned a 5-4, 10-inning victory during the opener before dropping a 2-1 decision in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a non-conference doubleheader at Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon.
Delaware (15-18) took the lead in the opener by scoring a run in the top of first, as Hanna Garber led off with a single and eventually scored when Brooke Glanden reached on an error.
Garber then singled home a pair of runs in the top of the second, before Sarah Bessel scored on throwing error by the Hawks catcher as the Blue Hens extended the lead to 4-0.
Monmouth (17-12) got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, before rallying to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of walks, Erika Coreth delivered an RBI single before Lindsey Baron ripped a run-scoring double to force extra innings.
The game remained tied until the 10th when Brittney Mendoza led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Glanden.
The Hawks put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom half, but Maddi Marsh recorded a strikeout and a popout to shortstop to seal the victory. Marsh earned her fifth victory of the season after firing 3.1 scoreless frames of relief, while Garber and Anna Steinmetz each recorded a pair of hits.
Delaware then struck first in the nightcap, as Karolina Flores doubled with two outs in the top of the second before Reyna de Jesus followed with an RBI single to leftcenter.
However Monmouth countered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Katie Harrington scored the Hawks' first run on a throwing error, before Sam Tomasetti singled home Baron with the winning run.
