NEWARK, Del. – Julia Solderitch delivered a two-run single with bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Delaware in front and the Blue Hens went on to defeat La Salle, 5-3, Wednesday afternoon in their final non-conference game of the year.
The Explorers (12-31) scored all three of their runs in the top of the first inning, as Audrey La Bouliere belted a two-run homer and Cailey Joyce later added an RBI single.
Delaware (22-26) got on the board in the bottom of the second when Karolina Flores singled, moved to third on a Chayanna Gallardo double, and scored on a two-out single by Solderitch. After Flores and Brittney Mendoza opened the fourth with singles, both runners executed a double steal, while Flores scored on the play on a throwing error by the La Salle catcher.
The Blue Hens still trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but rallied for three runs to go in front. Delaware loaded the bases with nobody out when Flores was hit by a pitch, Mendoza reached on a sacrifice bunt, and Gallardo was hit by a pitch. Following a pitching change, Solderitch lined a two-run single to right to put Delaware on top.
One out later, pinch runner Miranda O'Donald crossed the plate on a passed ball to give the Blue Hens an insurance run.
La Salle put the tying runners on base with two outs in the seventh, but relief pitcher Sarah Piening retired Joyce on a groundout to end the game.
Solderitch finished 2 for 2 with three RBI to pace the Delaware attack, while Flores was also 2 for 2 with three runs scored. Piening, who allowed just one hit in two innings of scoreless relief, picked up her 14th win of the season.
