Walter Selected by Red Sox in 2019 MLB Draft

The lefty was taken in the 26th round by the defending champions
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball program has had its fourth pitcher in five years selected in the MLB Draft Wednesday when junior Brandon Walter had his named called in the 26th round by the Boston Red Sox.
"After everything that Brandon has been through and seeing him work as hard as he did to get back to the top of his game, we couldn't be prouder," said head coach Jim Sherman. "He is the true definition of a competitor and I believe he will thrive at the next level."
It has been quite the week for the New Castle, Delaware native, earning his degree in criminal justice over the weekend before going in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Walter became the fourth pitcher in Delaware history to strikeout 100-plus batters in a single season in his junior campaign, punching out 106 batters and sits in third all-time in career strikeouts with 252.
In his Blue Hen career, Walter pitched 230.0 innings with a 3.68 ERA and compiled a 16-14 record, starting in each of his 37 appearances. He put together double-digit strikeout performances five times in his junior season, including a season-high 12 on two separate occasions.
In 2017, he threw 8.0 innings of one-hit baseball against Penn State, striking out a career-high 17 Nittany Lions in the process and in 2019, he pitched 6.0 no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts against Villanova which was interrupted by an hour-long power outage.
Walter was forced to redshirt for the 2018 season after going down with an injury midway through 2017, but bounced back to average 11.05 strikeouts per nine this season, ranking seventh in program history.
The redshirt junior does have one more year of eligibility remaining.
